Once your television is safely in place, setting it up is usually straightforward. Modern smart TVs guide you through most of the process with on-screen prompts. This guide explains each stage in plain language so you know what to expect. It's general information — your TV's own on-screen instructions always take priority.
1. Unbox and Inspect
Carefully unpack the TV and check for any transit damage before switching it on. Keep the remote, stand, screws and cables together. If you're wall-mounting, see our TV Mounting Guide first.
2. Understand the Connections
Most TVs share a common set of ports on the back or side:
- Power — the mains cable.
- HDMI — for streaming boxes, game consoles, soundbars and Blu-ray players. Label: HDMI 1, 2, 3…
- Aerial / antenna or cable — for over-the-air or cable channels.
- Ethernet (LAN) — for a wired internet connection (Wi-Fi is the wireless alternative).
- Optical / audio out — for connecting external speakers or a soundbar.
Connect the essentials first: power, your aerial or cable (if using broadcast channels), and any HDMI devices.
3. Power On and Follow the Setup Wizard
Turn the TV on and it should launch a setup wizard. Typically you'll:
- Choose your language and region/country.
- Connect to the internet via Wi-Fi (enter your network password) or Ethernet.
- Accept the manufacturer's terms and, if you wish, sign in to the TV platform account.
- Allow the TV to check for software updates — installing these improves stability and features.
4. Tune In Channels
If you use an aerial or cable connection, run the channel scan (sometimes called auto-tuning). The TV searches for available broadcast channels and saves them in order. This step is optional if you only plan to stream.
5. Set Up Your Apps
Smart TVs include an app store where you can install the streaming services you already subscribe to. Sign in to each app with your existing account details. Only use official apps and services you're legitimately subscribed to.
6. Adjust Picture Settings
Out of the box, many TVs are set to a very bright "vivid" mode for shop displays. For home viewing, try these starting points:
- Switch the picture mode to Standard, Movie or Cinema for a more natural image.
- Reduce excessive brightness and sharpness to comfortable levels.
- Enable energy-saving or ambient light features if you prefer.
7. Improve the Sound
Flat-screen TVs have limited built-in speakers. Choose a sound preset that suits your room, and consider a soundbar (connected via HDMI ARC or optical) if you want fuller audio. Set the TV's audio output correctly if you add external speakers.

- No picture from a device? Check you've selected the correct HDMI input/source.
